PARTNERS IN CHRIST Director: Kate Forbes Partners In Christ is composed of 190+ families from St. Bernard’s that have volunteered their time, talent and treasure to helping those in need from the parish and the community at large. It began in response to Hurricane Katrina victims but has evolved to include an ongoing mission of service locally. These families have been divided into 9 groups with a Leader and Assistant assigned. Service requests received are reviewed by an Oversight Committee and those approved are assigned to a group for action plan development. The action plan is carried out by group members until the need is satisfied – short or long term. Service requests may come from a variety of sources consisting of parishioner referrals, call-ins to the church, prayer line, Catholic Charities, Katrina Aid Today, the Katrina Survivors Self Advocacy Coalition, the Long-term Recovery and Case Management Committee (serves unmet needs of hurricane victims), Tulsa Metropolitan Urban League and other local agencies, churches and concerns. It is an evolutionary process dependent upon what needs cross our path. In addition, PIC’s objectives also include finding ways to raise the awareness level of our parishioners in regard to disaster preparedness and recovery planning in conjunction with city governments. PIC can make use of any amount of time, talent and/or treasure someone wants to give. Cases have ranged from babysitting triplets, providing meals/groceries for families in need, transportation to doctor appointments, rental assistance for a mother trying to keep her family together, Angel tree gifts and telephones for Katrina victims, supporting Katrina Survivors’ programs (supplied food for Fat Tuesday event, T-shirts for 3-on-3 basketball tourney, arranged Channel 6 weather education seminar featuring, Dick Faurot), providing clothing/household supplies/appliances, donating toys, educational materials (print and computer) to fundraising to preserve a family’s home and financial well-being after their daughter’s nearfatal shooting. In addition, securing and delivering portable basketball goals to the delight of 2 families both impacted by Katrina. The PIC mission statement does the best job of summing up the Partners In Christ effort. It is taken from I Peter 4:9-11: “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.” PIC service is an opportunity in which both giver and receiver are blessed. DIOCESAN SEXUAL ABUSE POLICY The Diocese of Tulsa is committed to providing a safe environment for all parishioners to worship, to learn , to play and to promote community. All volunteers who interact with anyone under the age of 18 years old are required to participate in a VIRTUS one time session. A background check and informational paperwork. All other volunteers are encouraged to at least participate in a VIRTUS session. Awareness of the problem of Sexual Abuse of Children and how we can all be part of the solution is laying the groundwork for solving and affecting the societal problem. |
