Ushers

Responsibilities of Ushers

Because you are the first one anyone sees as they enter the church doors, please be welcoming and dress appropriately, in dress pants or slacks, a dress shirt or blouse and shoes. No tennis shoes or t-shirts please and no flip-flops.

Please sign in on the Ministry sheet. Each Usher has his/her duties before, during and after Mass. Please be here early to take care of your areas. Thank you.

General Information

Collection: Starts as soon as the congregation sits after the Intercessory Prayers. Do not wait for the Family to take forward the gifts. Put the money into the bank bags and into the safe. Second collections will also go into the bank bags but add a note, if not already on the outside of the bag, that it is a 2nd Collection. Deacon Campbell often does this in advance.

Back pew upstairs is for handicapped and elderly.

Please straighten your section of pews for the next Mass.

Head usher should stand in the back during Mass in case there is an emergency and to note who is unable to go downstairs for Communion. When those in the back pew, who are able, go down the steps for Communion, ask the rest of the persons in the pew whether they wish to receive Communion. The Communion Minister will come from the bottom of the steps. Indicate to the Communion Minister, those who requested Communion.

USHER 1: (Head Usher): Sign in ministers. Check the tabernacle for the number of Hosts (if it is not already written in the space provided on the sign-in sheet) and leave the key in the tabernacle door for Mass. Write the Host count on the sign-in sheet. Never remove or add to the Hosts in the tabernacle. Put unconsecrated hosts from the usher's room cupboard into the bowls and put them on the Offertory Table at the back pew downstairs at Gospel time when you can get a good count of those present. Please be sure to include a 3 inch host in one bowl. We have a parishioner who may let you know when they come that they will need a non-gluten host. If there aren't any in the Usher's Room, go to the glass front-cabinet in the Sacristy, bottom shelf. Put the non-gluten host in the bowl on top ofthe large host. The filled wine-flagon should be at the table.

Pass baskets in Section I and the Nursery.

Lock Church outside doors and turn off lights after 5:00 Saturday and 5:00 Sunday Masses.

USHER 2: Please greet, seat people and pass the collection baskets in Section II next to the nursery and small 3- pew section. Usher 2 carries the processional cross in and out. If you cannot do this, switch sections with another usher. Take the cross straight to the holder and insert. Do not stop at the front pew! Go quickly in front of Father's chair, up the side aisle near the north wall. Do not pass in front of the tabernacle.

When the closing song is announced, enter white doors and retrieve cross. Go to the middle aisle
and face the tabernacle. When Father genuflects, turn and lead the procession out. Place cross in holder near sign-in podium.

Straighten your section of pews for next Mass.

USHER 3: Please greet & seat people and pass collection baskets in Section III (downstairs-east side) from the side aisle. Check the Lectionary to be sure the ribbon is on the right page. Hand Reader I the Lectionary as he/she passes by. Select a family or group for the Offertory Procession as they come into the church. Show them the table. The wine should be there. The hosts will be added at the Gospel time. Tell them to go to the table right after the Intercessory Prayers (for the church, Pope, Bishop, Sick, etc.) When the Deacon or Presider comes to the middle aisle, they then take up the gifts.

After Mass, hand out bulletins.
